Charles Hopkins Clark (S&B 1871)

Member of general committee on the Bi Centennial; former president of Yale Alumni Association of Hartford and its representative on Alumni Advisory Board; MA. 1874; Litt D. Trinity 1910;aided in editing Memorial History of Hartford County in 1884;had contributed articles to Scribner’s Magazine North American Review, and Critic; honorary member Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Connecticut, charter member Twentieth Century Club of Hartford, member Second (South) Congregational Church, Hartford, 1885—1916, and since then of Asylum Hill Congregational Church, of which he had been a member prior to 1885.

1926, elected member of council of Connecticut Civic Association, successor to Connecticut Civil Service Reform Association.[4]

1921 - Director of Connecticut Civil Service Reform Association for a time, later resigned and advocated repeal of Connecticut Civil Service Law, which was accomplished by the Legislature.[4]

1910 to 1925 - member of Yale Corporation (chairman of committee on honorary degrees 1921 to 25).[4]

1908 to 1912 - Member Hartford Board of Park Commissioners.[4]

1906 to 1907 - Bromley lecturer at Yale.[4]

1902 - Member Connecticut Constitutional Convention and of commission created by the Legislature in 1905 to study the direct primary.[4]

15 Nov 1899 - Married (2), in Hartford, Matilda Colt Root, a sister of his first wife.No children by second marriage.[4] On editorial staff of Hartford Courant since graduation (reporter for some years; made assistant editor about 1890; editor-in-chief since 1900); became secretary of the Hartford Courant Company upon its incorporation in 1890, vice President 1892, and president and a director 1906; a director of The Associated Press since 1910 and member of its executive committee at time of death; a director Connecticut Mutual Life, Phoenix (Fire), and Travelers Insurance companies andof the Collins Company, edge tool makers, of Collinsville,Conn (also vice-president since 1887).[4]

Since 1888, Had attended every Republican National Convention, the first eight as a reporter, and the others as a delegate-at-large from Connecticut.[4]

Since 1887, Director Watkinson Farm School , Good WillClub of Hartford since its incorporation in 1888 (also treasurer until 1912), and Connecticut Reformatory since its establishment in. 1909 (president since 1920).[4]

Since 1884, Trustee of Wadsworth Athenaeum and its treasurer for many years.[4]

Since 1883, Trustee of Watkinson Library of Reference , Secretary 1884 to 1886, and Treasurer 1902 to 1925.[4]

1877 - Became head of the Young Men’s Institute (now Hartford Public Library), a director of the Library Association in 1879, and its treasurer in 1883, serving in the last capacity for about thirty years.[4]

Corporate member Connecticut Humane Society (1884), becoming member of its executive committee and board of directors 1890 (had servedas vice-president since 1919);

15 Dec 1873 - Married (1), in Hartford, Ellen, daughter of Ehsha King and Matilda (Colt) Root Children: Horace Bushnell ‘98, and Mary Hopkins (Mrs Henry K W Welch).Mrs. Clark died February 28, 1895.

1871 - Graduated Yale, Skull and Bones Patriarch.[1]

Died 5 Sep 1926, from cerebral hemorrhage. Age 77
