At Pitt, Mr. Ahlbrandt came to see the private sector as the best impetus for social change. He founded and directed the Institute for Industrial Competitiveness, a research center funded by private money. Also during that time, he and Carnegie Mellon President Emeritus Richard Cyert undertook a decade-long study of the changing global steel industry that involved five universities and was funded by millions of dollars from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the steel industry and government.[3]

1980’s - Director of ACTION-Housing as director of housing research development. Becoming a member of its board and served as its president for five years.[3]

1981 to 1982 - Deputy Assistant Secretary, Secretary Samuel Pierce (Sphinx Head Society. Alpha Phi Alpha.
